From Routes 22, 24, 1 & 9 or I-78
  • Take any of these highways towards Newark (they all converge just north of Newark Airport).
  • Take exit for Route 21 (Newark). Route 21 becomes McCarter Highway in downtown Newark.
  • For U.S. Court House: From McCarter Highway turn left onto Lafayette Street, then turn left onto Mulberry Street (3 blocks down). Court House is 2 blocks down on the right, between Franklin and Walnut Streets. The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Bldg. and Court House is on Walnut Street, one block further. Note: Walnut Street is closed to vehicular traffic between Mulberry and Broad Streets for security reasons.
  • For Essex County Court House: From McCarter Highway, turn left onto Raymond Blvd., then turn left onto Mulberry Street (one block down), then turn right onto Market Street. The Court House is one block up, at the junction of Market Street and Springfield Avenue.

From the Garden State Parkway

  • Take Exit 145 to I-280 E. Then proceed as below.

From I-280 East

  • Take Exit 14A for King Blvd.
  • Turn right at the traffic light at the bottom of the exit ramp onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (formerly High Street).
  • Essex County buildings are about ¾ mile down (Old Court House is on the left, Hall of records is on the right).
  • For U.S. Court House, turn left on Court Street (5 blocks past Old Court House). U.S. Court House is 6 blocks down on the left.
From I-280 West
  • Take Exit 15, Broad Street/King Blvd. Turn left at bottom of exit ramp.
  • Turn left a second time onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (approximately 0 feet from exit ramp).
  • Essex County buildings are about ¾ mile down. (Old Court House is on the left, Hall of Records is on the right). For U.S. Court House, turn left on Court Street (5 blocks past Old Court House). U.S. Court House is 6 blocks down on the left.

From N.J. Turnpike

  • Take Exit 15W to I-280 West. Then proceed as above.

From Route 3

  • Take exit for Route 21 South (Newark).
  • Take Route 21 South into downtown Newark, where it becomes McCarter Highway.
  • For U.S. Court House: From McCarter Highway turn right onto Lafayette Street, then turn left onto Mulberry Street (3 blocks down). Court House is 2 blocks down on the right, between Franklin and Walnut Sts.
  • For Essex County Courthouse: From McCarter Highway, turn right onto Market Street Court House is at the junction of Market St and Springfield Avenue

Parking for Essex County Courthouse

Street parking is generally scarce in downtown Newark. For the Essex County buildings, parking is permitted in the juror parking lots near the County Courts Bldg. between 13th and S. Orange Aves. (nonjurors must pay a fee). There are no public parking lots near the U.S. Court House, but there are several commercial lots in the area, the nearest being on Mulberry Street between Green and Elm Sts.
